Reproduction and life cycles

• single developmental line ‘winged line’

• all individuals can eventually mature into winged reproductives

Nesting behaviour

• Entire life of colony is inside a single piece of wood
• Unable to burrow through soil
• Small queens
• Small colony sizes (< 000s of termites)
• Colony lifespan related to size of wood

Examples:

‘drywood’ termites – Cryptotermes spp. and Kalotermes spp.

‘dampwood’ termites – Porotermes adamsoni

E.g. Cryptotermes, Kalotermes and Porotermes
