Nesting behaviour

• Colony will live in multiple pieces of wood
• ‘Subterranean’ = able to burrow through soil (and so find more wood)
• Medium queens
• Medium colony sizes (< 00,000s of termites)
• Colony lifespan increased

Examples: Mastotermes darwiniensis, Heterotermes spp. and Schedorhinotermes spp.

Reproduction and life cycles

Two developmental lines:

• ‘winged line’
• ‘wingless line’

Flexible development all individuals might eventually mature into winged or wingless reproductives

E.g. Mastotermes, Heterotermes and Schedorhinotermes
