Located just 5 km west of Brisbane city, Taringa (4068) is a steep suburb because of its position on either side of a ridge. Due to its proximity to both University of Queensland and Queensland University of Technology, Taringa is densely populated by young students from diverse cultural backgrounds and is home to a Japanese Language School. Otherwise, Taringa is largely a residential suburb with some commercial activity along a major arterial road with regular transport access by rail, bus and road to Brisbane, Ipswich and surrounding suburbs.

In 2011, 7200 people lived in Taringa, their average age is 29 years. Residents were predominantly Anglo-Australian with a minority from China, Malaysia, and India. Although English was the major language spoken at home, Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay, and Spanish were spoken alongside.
