Siding or cladding

Cladding

Siding or cladding is the application of one material such as timber, vinyl, steel, fibre cement, stone or polystyrene over another to provide a skin or layer to control infiltration of weather or for aesthetic purposes.

However, cladding does not necessarily have to provide water-proofing but may be a control element which safely directs water or wind run-off and prevents infiltration into the building.
